The Polson girls and the Whitefish boys retained their crowns, and this year they'll be wearing them much closer to home.

The Lady Pirates and the Bulldogs successfully defended their Western A divisional tennis titles Saturday at Flathead Valley Community College, qualifying six and seven players, respectively, for next week's state tournament. Polson is the tournament host, but rain could force action to The Summit in Kalispell.

Polson's Cali Hislop and Malika Erickson repeated as doubles champions, rallying past teammates Maddie Grebetz and Mattea York 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. The Lady Pirates are sending three doubles teams to state.

Whitefish's Matt Harris won his third straight divisional title, this time teaming with Brendan Viscomi in a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 thriller against Columbia Falls' Grant Getts and Cody Maynard.

Renzo Caimi won an all-Whitefish championship match against Ryan Rottenbiller 6-0, 6-0. The Bulldogs are sending three singles players and two doubles pairs to Polson.

Libby's Jackie Mee retained her singles title, outlasting Whitefish's Brielle Menegazzi 6-3, 6-1 in a sequel to last year's championship duel.

The Whitefish boys ran away from the field with 79 points. Bigfork repeated its second-place finish with 33 points, followed by Polson (21), Columbia Falls (18) and Libby (9).

The Lady Pirates edged Whitefish by one point last year. They had more breathing room this time, tallying 55 points, followed by Whitefish (39), Bigfork (34), Libby (31) and Columbia Falls (11).

"It's still a great feeling," said Harris, who placed second in singles at last year's state tournament in Miles City. "Doubles or singles, it really is."

Harris said he and Viscomi honed their return game during their third-set victory against Getts and Maynard, who played together at state last year.

"They're very consistent players," Harris said. "They just get everything back, hit amazing shots. They're a very solid doubles team."

Viscomi agreed.

"We just had to play more consistently," he said. "We were missing a lot of balls the second set, and they were starting to get in our heads a little. But then we buckled down towards the end there."

Erickson and Hislop are still undefeated. Their opening-set loss to Grebetz and York was their first in conference play.

"Our second-closest match was with them at the Bitterroot tournament," Hislop said. "We won the first set in the tie-breaker and they won the second, so they have been our toughest competition all year.

"I think the first set we were just a little nervous. They were a lot looser, I think, than we were. I think we just relaxed and started playing our game."

Erickson was glad to stay unbeaten, but she admitted that the tension is mounting.

"I definitely feel the pressure, but Cali doesn't," she joked.

Hislop and Erickson advanced to the consolation semifinals in Miles City, but Erickson said playing at home provides mental advantages, namely "sleeping in your own bed, having your own food."

A Chilean exchange student, Caimi lost just one game all tournament.

"That was my goal, to win the divisional and go to state," he said.

His uncanny serves proved difficult to handle, even for Rottenbiller, who placed fourth at state last spring.

"We played without pressure," Caimi said. "We both were going to state, so it was like a friendly match."

The Mee-Menegazzi showdown came as no surprise. The two have squared off seven times over the last two years, including three times this spring.

"The score doesn't really show it, but this was just as good as all the rest of them," Mee said. "All the points were back and forth, back and forth the whole time."

Mee placed fourth in Miles City.

"Last year I was a little nervous because it was the first time I've been to a state tournament, so this year I just plan to play like I have been and try to shake out some of the nerves."

The Bulldogs took second at state last year, six points behind Billings Central. Ian Hosek is headed to Polson, along with doubles duo Kyle Jacobson and Trey Lagrandeur.

"Ian played at state last year, and Ryan placed at state last year with Matt," Whitefish coach Kathy Cummings said. "They've got the experience going in, so hopefully it's going to be a positive one.

"It's going to be a lot nicer spending the night in Polson rather than Miles City. Not that there's anything wrong with Miles City, but it's going to be a lot nicer being closer."

Other Western A boys headed to state are Getts and Maynard and Bigfork's Phillip Myers and Tyler Butts/Scott Taylor.

Menegazzi and Kate Klundt will represent the Lady Bulldogs in Polson. Bigfork is sending doubles partners Quindee Averill and Roxy Thurman, while Cassie Ward and Kayla Rochin round out the Lady Pirates contingent. Sarah Marcille will represent Columbia Falls.

"It's great to be able to play at home," Polson coach Bob Hislop said. "Last year we drove 500 miles and then had to put up with the rain.

"Even if you have rain, you're sleeping in your own bed, so it's a huge advantage. I don't think there's any doubt about that."
